The Great Pinterest Challenge

I have a few friends that we are all crazy over Pinterest. We have similar tastes, so at least 50% of what we have pinned have been repinned by others. One friend texted me to say her goal for this year would be to wear at least one Pinterest inspired outfit per week. I thought that was pretty clever, but I wanted to expand it. I decided that I would try one Pinterest inspired "thing" each week-whether a recipe, outfit, craft, whatever. That was 2 weeks ago...and you see how much I've done with it.

As fate would have it, though, we lost our cable, internet and phone in a storm last Saturday. The lovely repairman at Verizon finally came today and fixed the primary problem in about 5 minutes and also replaced a cable box that had gone bad upstairs. He was here for a grand total of 20 minutes.

This time, though, gave me a chance to catch up on some of my Pinterest-ing ideas. I found two different ideas that I had been meaning to try for a while, and finally got around to.

 Oatmeal Cupcakes

Last night I attempted these cupcakes. I thought it might make for a fabulous, hardy and healthy breakfast. What I didn't think about was that fruit, when combined into a recipe, adds points. Even though these are primarily bananas, they were a little more points plus wise that I would have wanted. But they are very healthy. I'm not sure how I feel about the texture. Mine were a little bit mushier than I had expected, but the hubster likes them. He thinks they need a little salt, but overall not bad.

My version
I think they look better in the pictures than in real life.

Our second idea was a home decor/improvement idea. We do not have a "regular" laundry room, but rather a hallway that leads out to the garage.  We used to have bi-fold doors covering the washer and dryer, but they always got in the way. Then, one fell off the hinge. We've been living with our washer and dryer just out there for all the world to see for a month or so...I saw this on Pinterest a long time ago and thought it would work for us.

I got a shower curtain to use to cover up ours. I still want to play around some with of the positioning and length. I haven't hemmed it yet for that purpose. I found this shower curtain way back in March for $10 at Garden Ridge, but I think it's going to help keep the mess hidden and make the wall interesting.  So here's my version:

Not amazing, but most convenient.

So those are my "big" projects. Stay tuned for what mess I make next.

Raggedy Ann Baby Shower

It's funny the people you become friends with...and stay friends with. Waaaaay back in 1993, my family moved to a new area, and life as we knew it started over. I saw an ad in the local paper about a youth ballet company which was having open auditions, so my 11 year old self called the number listed, found out all the details, and made my mother take me other to the auditions. To this day, I am still an active member of this organization. I have gone from dancer to student choreographer to faculty/resident choreographer.

You make a lot of friendships throughout your lifetime, but it's always interesting to me the friendships that keep over time. On that fateful night back in 1994, I met Rachel. She was already a member of the company, auditioning to go from an apprentice to a senior member of the company. I'd love to say that from that point forward we were BFFs, but that's not the case. For most of our middle school careers, we were acquaintances. In high school, we became better friends, but we didn't get especially close until our senior year of high school. We maintained close contact throughout college-she was an art ed major, while I was a dance ed major. I made a valiant attempt to attend her senior art show; unfortunately, this was before GPS was commonplace. I got so lost and car sick all at once-I never made it there. We were participants in each others weddings, and now, we both teach at the studio where we first met. When she announced she was expecting her first child, I was thrilled to offer to throw her a baby shower. When she announced it was a little girl, I knew exactly what I wanted to do.

We danced a piece called "The Doll Shop" for what seemed like forever. We rotated different parts, but Rachel was always the rag doll. That was a signature piece-she loved performing it and audiences loved watching her do it. I was bound and determined to throw her a Raggedy-Ann inspired baby shower.

I found these invitations from Nichole at Olive+Star on etsy. I knew they were perfect for my idea. Nichole was so awesome to work with-very professional and efficient.

Nichole even created these baby wish cards to go along with the invitations. We put them at each place setting.

I was co-hosting with the studio owner, and both of us live a bit away from most of the guests, so we opted to host the shower at the studio. That meant we had a huge open room to figure out how to decorate. We decided to use leftover gingham material from some costumes as table coverings, and in an attempt to avoid watching ourselves eat, we used the creative movement parachutes as a bunting to cover the mirrors.

We used card tables for guest tables. Center pieces included a small vase of carnations, baby blocks, and glasses of jelly beans and beans on each table.
I used scrapbook paper, ribbon, and a healthy dose of rubber cement to create this pennant banner.

The food table...Raggedy Ann and Andy had to be our centerpiece, backed up by our lollipop favor tree. The banner on the wall consisted of letter templates from Martha Stewart, and more scrapbook paper, ribbon, and rubber cement.

Cheese, rainbow fruit skewers (thank you, Pinterest!), crabmeat dip, and yellow cupcakes with strawberry filling.
Strawberries with sweet cream cheese filling, spanakopita bites, chicken salad cups, veggie platter, and more cupcakes.

The drink table. One thing Rachel made me promise was that there would be some sort of wine or alcohol at the shower. In her words, "Just because I'm forced into sobriety doesn't mean every one else should be." Other drinks included coffee punch and water.

The gift table. We used the creative movement mats to cover the "business" of the studio (i.e. stereo, CDs, portable barres, props for children's classes). This also was the gift table. I wish I had gotten a picture of it covered in gifts.

It was a fabulous shower. We invited about 20 people, and ended up with 15 in attendance. We were all close, and everyone was extremely comfortable with each other. We did not play any games-just lots of good conversation, food, and wine. I was so happy to be able to do this for Rachel, and cannot wait to meet her little girl.

Forest Friends Baby Shower

My cousin and I have always been super close. We are 2 months, 5 days apart in age. Our mothers are identical twins and very close, so Joseph and I essentially grew up together. And to make things seem a little backwoods, redneck...we are technically half brother and sister, at least from a genetic point of view. As our mothers share the same DNA, it would genetically look like we have the same mother and different fathers.

He got married to his high school sweetheart 4 months before I got married, and I have always been friends with his wife. (She let me borrow her shoes in 5th grade when I had to go sing with the chorus...we had been sitting on the bleachers and I dropped my shoes off under the bleachers. Now that is a good friend.)

When they announced back in March that they were expecting a little one, we are all very excited for them. And being the hostess I am, I was super excited at any opportunity to host another event. The theme for the shower was inspired by their bedding set, Carter's Tree Tops. I perused etsy.com and found these adorable invitations by Kim's Custom Creations. Don't they coordinate perfectly?

The shower was hosted at our local church at 2pm on Sunday, August 1. This was the first time I had hosted a shower at a venue, not a home, so I probably went a little overboard with trying to make sure every detail was perfectly planned.

My first task was to figure out how to set up the fellowship hall. When you're in  home, it's obvious how to arrange seating, but I felt like I was starting with a big, empty slate. The church only had 8' banquet tables...I wanted to avoid the cafeteria feel, but I did not have the resources (or feel the need) to rent round tables when there were perfectly good tables available to me. After much thought, I came up this floor plan.

The "U" shaped lay out really helped to facilitate conversion and everyone could see the Mom-to-be open gifts.

Now, I stated, the church had 8' banquet tables, as well as vinyl table cloths to cover them. Once again, I didn't see the need to rent fabric table cloths, but I did want to dress them up a bit. I took some basic cotton and made some 44" and 22" squares in a variety of colors that coordinated with our theme (light green, dark green, yellow, and pink). On the guest tables, I used 4" terra cotta pots adorned with ribbon and holding garden annuals in pink and yellow shades. The result was beautiful and organic.

The cake table consisted a beautiful cake made my the mom-to-be's sister.

The drink table consisted of my favorite strawberry-lemonade punch, several pitchers of water, and two other terra cotta arrangement.

On the food table, we used our own fabric table cloths with the square accents as well. The centerpiece of that table was the diaper cake I made earlier this summer. I also used some small forest stuffed animals to accent the table. (I searched all over for those things...finally found some at JoAnn's fabric, of all places!)

Speaking of food, our menu looked something like this:
  • Chicken Salad on croissants
  • Fruit Platter
  • Spinach Artichoke Roll Ups
  • Veggie Tray
  • Cheese platter (cheddar, pepperjack,  swiss)
  • Goat Cheese with Sundried Tomato Spread with Pita Slices
  • Ham Biscuits
We used the front stage to put the gifts on.
And boy, did she receive some gifts.

We had a great afternoon-now we just need to wait about 6 more weeks to have a new little one in the family!

Cheeseburger in Paradise, again

The past two weeks have been super busy and not really good. Without going into silly details, the hubs's college is playing games with him regarding his degree...5 weeks after graduation. On top of some other stuff going, we decided that Friday afternoon after work was the perfect time to use a gift card to Cheeseburger in Paradise, one of our favorite restaurants.

I love that we got there in plenty of time for happy hour. I started off the afternoon with a classic margarita, while the hubs had a classic mojito. I loved my margarita, and the hubs's mojito was pretty good, too. For our second round, I had the blueberry sangria, while the hubs had the mango peach mojito. Once again, the hubs drink was good, and mine was...eh. First of all, mine was huuuuuuuuuuuuuuge. It tasted good...but a lot like the blueberry punch I made for Sarah's baby shower. According to the menu, it was mixed with Barefoot Chardonnay, but I tasted no alcohol whatsoever. And I like to be able to taste my alcohol in a given drink. I'd definitely try another of their sangria's again, but I'd probably avoid the blueberry.

As far as food goes, both the hubs and I enjoyed our meals. I had the Jamaican Jerk Chicken with Sweet Potato Chips (my favorite ever) and the hubs had the Eggs-Straordinary  Burger with Fries (has anyone else noticed that eggs on burgers have been gaining popularity lately) and Gumbo. We both loved our food, and our afternoon certainly helped to perk up our day.

Lesson of the Day

I was so proud of myself this morning. I got up, put all the ingredients together to make a crockpot lasagna, and then headed over to Mom's house. Our plan was to make a variety of meals and freeze them for my sister so they wouldn't have to think about cooking once the baby comes. And we cooked like crazy fools. We made:
  • Meatloaf with Potatoes
  • Chicken Casserole
  • Green Bean Casserole
  • Broccoli Casserole
  • Lasagna
  • Salsa Chicken over Rice
  • Macaroni and Cheese
  • Chicken Alfredo
I knew I wouldn't want to cook when I got home, which is why I made sure I had the crockpot going before I left. Or did I?

When I called the hubs to say I was on my way home, he informs me we have a problem. I didn't plug in the crockpot.

Seriously? Who does that?

We went ahead and turned it on and attempted to eat it. It was not good. We filled up on salad tonight.

Lesson of the Day: Make sure your electronics are truly working for you.

Edit: The lasagna recipe I attempted can be found at Pachey's Treats. I do hope to try it again and plug in the crock this time!
